So you want to build a craps table – pt 1

I don’t know about you, but I like to play craps. But being stuck here in the midwest, I’m not that close to the bright lights of Sin City and a good craps game.

So I have started building a craps table to put in my basement. As my wife will chime in, I don’t really know where I’m going to fit a full size craps table down there, but I’m sure I can find room somewhere between my poker table (just an old dining room table) [update: new custom poker table built], my popeye cocktail arcade machine, and my pinball machine (original pinbot, sweet). It’s just a matter of creative furniture arrangement. [update: basement bar and casino is now set up and (mostly) finished]

cardboard tube of craps table plans

Pretty exciting, eh? I picked up the craps table plans from recroomplans.com for a steal on ebay a while back. I also picked up a nice 6′ casino quality layout from Kardwell. Then right when I was going to start construction a small delay came my way.

We had a daughter.

Now, as awesome as that is, and believe me, I was excited, it does put a bit of a time crunch on any plans to build things around the house. Even high priority necessities like craps tables.

So, the plans and the layout sat around collecting dust for a while. But, here I am, now ready to resume (start) this project.

  1. I took the plans out of the tube and carefully unrolled them.
  2. Figuring this to be a very high “attention to detail” type night, I went in and got myself a Red Dog. Now I don’t normally drink beer as “high quality” as Red Dog, but it was leftover from my brother’s bachelor party the weekend before (a whole nother story). I’m actually an Old Style man, myself.
  3. I started cutting out the paper templates with a box cutter.
  4. Two more Red Dogs, one band-aid, and 3 razor blades later, I had myslef a full set of templates ready to be traced onto some plywood.

Next Step: get myself some plywood and start tracing templates.

continue to part 2

  1. I had the same problem when we had a daughter. I had to cease all construction and incantations on the hellmouth I planned to construct in my basement.

Sometimes kids just get in the way of sin.

  2. [...] Now, I am knee deep in templates that I have to lay out on the plywood and trace. If you look closely, you can see evidence of a tiny creature that for some reason thought it was quite fun to run back and forth on the plywood as I traced out templates. Refer to part 1 for an idea of what I think this mysterious creature may be. [...]

  3. looks pretty “crappy”.

  4. you so funny.

  6. wanted to know how to get a plan now that I can not get one on recroomplans.com Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  7. Hi,

any more updates on your table? where did you get the plans from. Ive looked everyone and can’t find any

  8. all that is left is finishing trim and getting the mirror installed on the inside dealer wall.

i was going to wait to post final photos till that is done.

lately, i’ve been sidetracked with a couple poker tables, a blackjack table, and a bar.

  9. Do you know where the templates can be purchased? Recrooms.com doesn’t appear to be operating any longer. You table looks great.

  10. i haven’t seen the plans anywhere else, i guess i haven’t really been looking, tho.

if i ever find some again, i will post a link here.

  11. What type of plywood did you use… I see you say “CDX” but i’ve heard that hardwood is the way to go (but pricey). I was going to purchase some oak .750X48X96 but don’t want to waste money if not needed. Let me know. Also, did i read correct the inside radius for the corners is 1ft?

  12. sure, hardwood would be the way to go. assuming you have the funds to do it.

i used plain ol’ CDX plywood because
    1) i don’t have the funds
    B) there is no wood exposed with my upholstering finishing method, so there’s no reason to have pretty wood

  13. Has anyone ever found out where to get blue prints or a book on how to make a table yourself. I also looked on recrooms.com and can’t find anything there or anywhere else. Your help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  14. WHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

    what a crap table!

    Is it finished???

  15. recroomplans doesnt have it anyone know where to get step by step craps table plans

  16. What is the thickness for the corner pieces? The one that you cut so many with the jig saw. Thanks. Nice Craps Table!

  17. You can find a set of free plans for a fullsize table at http://www.crapsfest.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=5

  18. i wish the plans at crapsfest would show a finished table example. don’t know exactly how that one ends up looking.

plus it takes a HUGE amount of lumber: 8 sheets of 1/2″ AND 8 sheets of 3/4″ ply?
plus another whole list of lumber?

wow, that would be one massive (and massively expensive) table.

  19. Can you provides some basic dimentions for the pieces making up the craps table? Your pics tell a good story, but the main measurements for the pieces would sure help me in my project.

    Love your finished product!
