So you want to build a craps table - pt 9

It is finished. At least, as finished as it is going to be since it still needs chip rails made and attached.

Where did I leave off. In our last episode, we left our hero with a craps table with no trim, no inside finishing done, things not painted and only one rail padded. A dire predicament indeed.

I made the second padded rail and painted all the exposed wood (see part 8 on the making of the rail). Then moved it down to the K2 lounge (basement) to put it into use.

It sat like that as I worked on various other projects until I found out I was going to be filmed for a new HGTV show called “Man Land”. That lit the fire under my butt to get this thing finished.

So here’s what I did:

Added some side trim pieces to cover the staples in the upholstered outside of the tub. Just some simple pine trim half round, painted gloss black, and attached with finishing nails.

After my previous experiences, I gave up on the idea of having a curved mirror and just cut a cheap ($2.50 on sale) full length mirror to fit. Glued it in place, done and done. I surrounded the mirror with the self stick vinyl tile I used on the other side of the inside of the tub. Looks pretty slick. In these photos, the flash really reflects off the white edges of the tile, but in person, you can hardly see the edges after i went over them with a black Sharpie.

The biggest dilemma was how to trim the curved top of the sides of the tub. I debated using everything from rubber door seal to vacuum cleaner hose, but nothing seemed to work. Either it didn’t fit right or it didn’t look right. Ended up slapping on some more of that self stick vinyl tile and it actually turned out pretty good. Gives it a good finish and shows off the curve nicely.

All in all, it was a fun project. Took way too long, but that’s how it goes. I’m happy with the result, even without the chip rail. Plus it’s been a lot of fun to play on.

Now if I could just find the perfect betting system…

  1. Hey there,

Really like the craps table and I am unable to locate the plans you purchased on Recroomplans.com, or on Ebay….Can you shed some light on this?

    Thanks again!

    Ryan

  2. i think recroomplans.com has gone out of business. i contacted them and got no response.

    sorry.

  3. Fantastic looking table. I’m in the process of building one myself, though from a different approach, building a top to my pool table that will break down for storage.

At any rate, can you elaborate on where you got your pyramid rubber and how much you paid? Is it me, or do companies charge a wad for even small lengths…upwards of 60 bux for 4 feet. I need 14 and don’t feel like shelling out $200 for it.

  4. i got it from discount casino gear: product link for $43.18 per 4 foot length.
but it looks like they don’t carry that product anymore.

that was the best deal i could find at the time.

sorry i can’t be more help for you.

    good luck on your table!

  5. The table looks great. I’m thinking about building a table myself, but I would like to do some budgeting before I get too into it. If you don’t mind me asking, What was you total cost in materials???

  6. how to get plans blue prints to build crap table like u built on this site

    thanks

    don

  7. WOW what a sloppy job, the felt is on crooked, you don’t do a drop in playing surface plus there are big gaps on it, you build it so the side walls come off for felt replacement you put the felt on and stretch for a perfect fit.
you didn’t even take the time to clean the rubber Diamond bumper.
The padding on the side makes it look cheap and no chip trays, very poor craftsmanship.
Nice try though, better luck next time.

  8. @HUMMM:
thanks for the constructive criticism, i’ll just clarify a few of your comments –
    — the playing surface IS drop in, there’s holes underneath that i can push through to push the playing surface up and out if i have to replace the felt
    — i did clean the diamond rubber bumper, but apparently, the flash caught the streaks. maybe you can suggest a good product to use for cleaning diamond rubber bumper that doesn’t leave streaks
    — i like the padding on the side
    — i would have liked to have chip trays, but it just didn’t happen
    — sorry you hate it, i promise never to build you one

  9. Dude.

Sounds like someone has a huge case of CRAPS TABLE ENVY.

Nice job making yourself look like an A-hole, HUMMM.

    Really, Class act.

  10. Kadee,
Sorry bro my 12′ craps table that i am currently building will make that thing look like it was bought from K-MART.

If i am an ASS-Hole for stating the odivous then so be it.

It’s people like you that can’t handel the truth.
CHADD i wouldn’t take anything from you even if it was free, you can tell by the looks of your basement you have very little CRAFTSMANSHIP, OR better put; lack of detail and poore design. i will keep in touch and show you what a real table looks like.

  11. I can see a little of HUMMM’s point, but I think it is very nice. I love the padding.

I myself have chip rails on mine, double in fact, and it is regulation size. 12 foot x 4 foot.

And the REAL layout is made of wool, not felt. I do not get those green fuzzies, plus the layout is deep dies, meaning, then when, and if, it wears down, the lines do not disappear, or course I spent more than $110…

Also, I have 4 of them and they were designed for my Casino Entertainment Company, which is no longer going, but I kept the tables. They are designed for transport. 6 x 4 each side set up on metal folding legs. Put a black piece of cloth attached to the edge with ‘t’ moulding and you get a sweet looking table.

Course yours has the nice base and is like a piece of furniture, but no one really sees it, and I can take mine to parties, which I still do.

    good job..

    maynard

  12. @HUMMM:
    so very angry, aren’t we.

    @Maynard
Yeah, i would have liked to do the chip rails, but i still haven’t had the opportunity. hopefully i’ll get to that eventually.
They layout i have is wool, got it from Kardwell, I think it was about $115 or so when I got it. I don’t expect it will ever wear out from the occasional use it gets in my basement during parties.

  13. Hummm… what a fool.

Chadd - nice job man. Looks great to me.
